Every year around this time, the messages start ramping up: "Get summer-ready!" "Have a Bikini body in 6 weeks!" These slogans are loud, persistent, and deeply rooted in diet culture.
At JCole Nutrition we focus on Intuitive Eating and reconnecting with your body. With that in mind, I’m here to tell you something that might feel radical in our appearance-obsessed culture: you don’t need to change your body for summer.
In fact, your body is already worthy of enjoying this season, exactly as it is.
Summer is marketed as a time to finally become your “best self,” but too often, that idea is limited to how you look — not how you feel, connect, or live. Diet culture wants you chasing body perfection so you’re too busy to question its toxic messaging. And it especially loves summer because it knows people feel more vulnerable in warmer-weather clothing and social settings.
But let’s be clear: your body is not a problem to be fixed.
Bodies are not seasonal decorations or DIY projects that need renovating every spring. They’re living, breathing systems that carry you through life — and they deserve care, not criticism.
Working toward body respect — even if you're not at full "body love" — means nourishing yourself, honoring hunger and fullness, moving in ways that feel good, and letting go of unrealistic appearance ideals.
You don’t need six-pack abs to feel the sun on your skin. You don’t need to shrink your body to swim, dance, laugh, travel, or exist in a tank top.
What if this year you didn’t spend the season obsessing over calories, steps, or the scale? What if you freed up that time and energy for experiences: beach days with friends, ice cream on a hot afternoon, late-night walks, or simply wearing what feels good in your body?
Intuitive eating is rooted in listening to and trusting your body — and that includes trusting it to be just as it is. The more we make peace with food and body image, the more we open ourselves up to true joy, presence, and connection.
Unfollow accounts that make you feel “not enough” and fill your feed with diverse, joyful, body-positive content.
Check in with yourself: Are your food or movement choices rooted in self-care, or in body shame?
Challenge the thoughts that say you can’t participate until your body changes. Where did they come from? Who benefits from you believing them?
Wear the clothes that are comfortable and allow you to show up fully in your life — not the ones you think you “should” fit into.
Your worth isn't tied to your weight. Your summer isn't contingent on your size. Your body doesn't have to be a certain shape to be seen, celebrated, or loved.
This summer — and every season — you deserve to take up space, to nourish yourself without guilt, and to embrace the fullness of your life exactly as you are.
